Measuring ROI: KPIs for Subscription Design Services Versus In-House Designers
Tech · 6 min read
Start with leading and lagging indicators. Leading KPIs include cycle time for feature delivery, number of validated prototypes per quarter, and research velocity. Lagging KPIs include conversion lift, retention, support tickets, and NPS changes tied to design-led releases.
Compare these metrics across scenarios by modeling ramp time, recruitment cost, and expected throughput. A subscription team typically shows faster improvements in leading KPIs because of immediate capacity and specialized skills. In-house hires may outperform on long-term brand stewardship, but only after extended ramp and investment in ops.
Use short experiments: contract a subscription team for a quarter to deliver a scoped outcome like checkout optimization, measure results against predicted impact, and then decide whether to retain, transition, or hire. This evidence-driven approach removes much of the guesswork from the hiring versus subscription decision.
