Meta opens Horizon Platform SDK with real-time social presence APIs

The Horizon Platform SDK packages real-time presence, spatial audio, and object state sync into a unified set of APIs, letting developers create multi-user experiences that feel cohesive without building custom backends. Meta highlighted optimizations for bandwidth and jitter smoothing aimed at VR headsets and mobile AR clients.

A new avatar system supports layered customization and emotion-driven micro-expressions, along with a privacy toggle that replaces live facial expressions with canned gestures in sensitive contexts. The avatar pipeline is modular, permitting studios to plug in their own rendering while keeping network primitives intact.

Meta also published best-practice patterns for social comfort, such as proxemic boundaries, consent flows for recording, and ephemeral session modes for anonymous participation. The SDK is available now with sample projects and an early-access partner program.
