Meta opens Quest OS 6.1 to third-party storefronts and performance tuning

Quest OS 6.1 includes a storefront API that allows alternative VR marketplaces to integrate with headset-level purchase flows, subject to Meta’s platform review. The API supports in-headset discovery widgets and deep-linking into installed library views while preserving system-level purchase security.

On the performance side, Meta exposed an API for variable refresh rates, thermal-aware frame budgeting, and per-app power profiles so developers can tune rendering quality dynamically based on battery/thermals. There are also new telemetry hooks for adaptive resolution and foveated rendering statistics.

Meta added a sandboxed testing channel for alternate stores and a compatibility program to ensure third-party offerings adhere to safety and moderation standards. The company said it will vet partners by technical and content guidelines rather than block them outright.

For studios, the new controls promise better runtime trade-offs and distribution experiments, but they also introduce complexity around compliance and QA across multiple storefronts. Meta provided documentation and pilot support to help devs transition.
