Meta open-sources Llama 3 Compact aimed at design tooling plugins

Llama 3 Compact is Meta's attempt to balance openness and practicality for the tooling ecosystem. The model is smaller than its flagship siblings but includes a toolkit for embedding into Electron apps, popular IDEs, and design tool plugin sandboxes with predictable memory usage and license terms friendly to commercial plugin developers.
Meta also published starter templates for common design tasks: component name suggestions, token inference from screenshots, and automated changelogs for design system updates. The company says community contributors will fine-tune Compact on domain-specific corpora like accessibility heuristics and platform guidelines.
Some privacy-conscious teams welcomed the open model, as it allows on-premise hosting and transparent auditing. However, competitors pointed out that Compact offers fewer multimodal capabilities than commercial alternatives, making it a pragmatic but limited choice for heavier image-to-layout tasks.
