Meta open-sources Nocturne: a lightweight multimodal for mobile UX

Nocturne focuses on a small memory footprint and efficient compute, enabling image-and-text tasks to run on modern smartphones with quantized weights and optimized runtimes. Meta released both model checkpoints and an inference SDK tailored for mobile GPUs and NPUs.

The model is packaged with pre-built components for object annotation, layout inference from photos, and short-form image captions that respect user privacy by avoiding cloud roundtrips. Developers can plug these components into photo-editing workflows, accessibility features, and AR overlays.

Meta included sample apps and integration guides for popular mobile frameworks, and invited community contributions for new small adapters to expand domain capabilities like receipts parsing and on-device OCR improvements.
