Microcopy Overhaul: Small Writing Changes that Increased Conversion for a Fintech App
Design · 4 min read
Conversion bottlenecks were concentrated on screens where users hesitated to link banking data or commit to contribution schedules. Analytics and session replays indicated users were unsure about data usage and feared hidden fees. The copywriting brief focused on clarity, reassurance, and progressive commitment—eliminating jargon, emphasizing privacy controls, and shifting from transactional language to goal-oriented prompts.
Rewrites included explicit labels ("Read-only bank connection—no transfers without your consent"), benefit-first CTAs ("Start building your retirement plan"), and micro-affirmations after each step ("You're on track—only two steps left"). Designers paired copy changes with small UI affordances: a privacy modal linked inline, a stepper that reflected remaining effort, and inline inline error feedback that suggested fixes.
A controlled experiment over 30 days delivered a 10% lift in bank-connection completion and a 7% increase in first-month active contributions. The case study underscores how copy is a product decision: tone, framing, and transparent affordances can reduce friction more cheaply than heavy visual redesigns.
