Microsoft Copilot for Designers Adds Local Model Support and Plugin SDK

Microsoft's update to Copilot for Designers enables teams to configure on-premise or edge model runtimes for sensitive projects while still using Copilot's orchestration and UI. The plugin SDK allows third-party vendors to register model endpoints that Copilot can call during design sessions.

The SDK supports structured outputs such as component descriptors and style tokens, and includes hooks for running model-inferred suggestions as background tasks. Microsoft also introduced permission controls and audit logs for model calls.

Design organizations in regulated industries welcomed the local runtime support, noting it enables advanced generative features without exposing proprietary assets. Plugin vendors are already creating specialized models for typography pairing and automated contrast remediation.
