Riftbound shipped with a static HUD that prioritized monetization elements and persistent buttons, which interfered with gameplay controls. Player telemetry highlighted two problems: frequent accidental taps on store and social buttons during combat, and a second-long delay in noticing mission updates. Designers prototyped an adaptive HUD that hid non-essential elements during combat, prioritized mission indicators with motion cues, and introduced a dynamic input buffer to prevent accidental taps near joystick controls. They also rearranged monetization placements to contextual moments, such as intermission screens, rather than always-on icons over gameplay.
After a staged rollout to 20% of users, Riftbound saw accidental-tap events drop by 44% and average combat session length increase by 11%. Net promoter score among active players improved, and revenue per session remained steady because monetization interactions were moved to higher-intent moments. The studio documented the HUD rules as part of its design system to ensure consistency across future updates.
