Multimodal Onboarding: Aurora Studio Adds Voice and Visual Hints to Improve Retention

Aurora Studio’s onboarding had traditionally been text-first tutorials and long walkthroughs that many users skipped. The product team hypothesized that adding short, optional voice guidance paired with synchronized visual highlights would help users complete key setup tasks without forcing them into long screens. The pilot included 15 to 30-second voice clips that explained immediate next steps while the UI highlighted target controls.

Designers crafted voice scripts to be neutral, supportive, and scannable; engineers implemented a sync layer to ensure highlights followed the spoken instructions even when users moved quickly. Accessibility considerations were central: captions, adjustable playback speed, and an always-available transcript ensured users could opt out of audio while retaining the benefits.

In the pilot cohort, first-session task completion rose by 19% and 14-day retention improved modestly. Interviews showed that users appreciated the “hand-holding” feel without the friction of forced walkthroughs. Aurora’s team plans to expand multimodal hints into deeper feature discovery while keeping strict analytics to measure any cognitive load increases for experienced users.
