Negotiating Offers in an AI-First Market: What Designers Should Ask For
Design · 4 min read
With generative AI central to many design workflows, candidates should negotiate for practical resources: dedicated model access, cloud credits, datasets, and time allocations for model evaluation. These non-salary items directly affect a designer's productivity and career growth.
Equity and bonus structures remain important, but recruiters also suggest asking about career ladders that explicitly recognize AI-related contributions. Expect questions about ownership of model outputs, IP, and whether the company pays for external compute when candidates run heavy experiments.
Other negotiation levers include protected learning time, training budgets, and explicit metrics for promotion that include cross-disciplinary impact. Candidates who frame requests in terms of business outcomes often secure better total packages than those focused narrowly on base pay.
