Obsidian Games raises $70M to launch episodic narrative RPG engine

The engine separates story state, scene scripting and dialogue assets, exposing a visual authoring layer where non-technical writers can create branching logic and test permutations. Live editing supports hot swaps of narrative episodes and dynamic variables for seasonal events.

Obsidian Games will open a developer program to let mid-size studios license the engine and publish episodic content on the studio’s distribution network. Built-in telemetry helps narrative teams see player pathing and engagement per branch.

Funds will be used for engine development, content curation infrastructure and a publishing fund to underwrite the launch of third-party episodic titles. The company also announced limited early access for select narrative teams.
