Onboarding Microcopy and Progress Bars: A Two-Week A/B Case Study for a Taxes App

The product team hypothesized that onboarding friction was language-driven and that users abandoned forms when they underestimated remaining effort. Designers created three variants: concise action-oriented microcopy, conversational empathetic microcopy, and the baseline. Each variant paired with either a granular step indicator or a single completion progress bar.

The experiment ran for two weeks with randomized new users. Researchers monitored completion rate, time-on-task, and qualitative exit feedback collected via one-question surveys. Results showed the concise action language combined with a granular step indicator performed best: faster completion times and 12% higher final submission rates compared to the baseline.

User comments indicated clarity and predictability mattered most — users liked knowing the exact remaining sections. The team rolled the winning copy and stepper to all users and added inline tips for complex fields as a secondary improvement.
