OpenAI's GPT-4o Design Edition arrives with a suite of capabilities aimed at turning written prompts into runnable interface prototypes. The model can output component hierarchies, JSON-based design tokens, and annotated interaction maps that integrate directly with popular design tools via a new prototyping API.

The prototyping API exports stateful component definitions and interaction flows in a standardized format that Figma, Framer, and several front-end libraries have already begun to adopt. OpenAI highlighted tighter guardrails for design safety — preventing the model from producing copyrighted UI clones while enabling rapid exploration of layout and microcopy.
