OpenAI launches GPT-4o Turbo: smallest multimodal model optimised for UI prototyping

OpenAI today announced GPT-4o Turbo, a slimmed-down variant of its GPT-4o family designed for interactive UI and prototyping workflows. The model supports text, image, and basic layout inputs and is optimized for low-latency responses that developers can embed in design apps or run with constrained hardware.

Early partners include two major design tools that are integrating GPT-4o Turbo as an assistant for component generation, copy suggestions, and automatic accessibility checks. OpenAI emphasized that the model sacrifices some long-context capabilities in favor of throughput and predictable inference cost, making it suitable for iterative design sessions and live collaboration.

The announcement also included a developer SDK with primitives for layout-aware prompts, token-level cost estimates, and a new 'frame understanding' endpoint that returns bounding boxes and suggested component types. OpenAI says pricing will be tiered to encourage experimentation by smaller studios and individual designers.
