OpenAI opens Canvas Plugins for in-Figma generative workflows

OpenAI's Canvas Plugins SDK lets third-party and internal teams embed GPT-driven workflows into Figma's canvas via a lightweight plugin layer. Plugins can read layer metadata, propose edits, generate component docs and return structured outputs tailored for design systems.

The platform prioritizes deterministic outputs and reproducibility: plugins can lock a seed and versioned model, produce audit logs of edits, and require team approvals before committing changes to shared files. OpenAI says this addresses common designer concerns about nondeterministic generations and lost iterations.

Early adopters are using Canvas Plugins for tasks like generating microcopy consistent with brand voice, creating responsive variants from a single frame, and translating low-fidelity wireframes into annotated high-fidelity screens. Pricing reflects token-based usage with discounts for enterprise seat bundles.
