OpenAI releases GPT-4.5o optimized for vector search and design asset retrieval

OpenAI launched GPT-4.5o, a model tailored for retrieval-augmented design workflows. The model integrates more tightly with vector databases and can surface design assets based on semantics, visual similarity, and usage context, improving discovery across large design libraries.

GPT-4.5o’s multimodal retrieval API accepts image queries and returns ranked assets with structured metadata—component type, token matches, and suggested replacements. The model prioritizes version-aware results, helping teams find the latest component variants that comply with brand tokens.

OpenAI also rolled out plugins for popular asset stores and DAMs to reduce friction when integrating GPT-4.5o into design pipelines. Security features include row- and column-level access control during retrieval to limit what the model can access in enterprise datasets.

Design leaders say the model could dramatically cut lookup time in organizations with extensive component libraries, though success depends on the quality of metadata and the system’s integration with existing design tokens and versioning policies.
