Whisper 2.0-lite trims the model size and includes mobile-optimized pipelines that reduce power consumption while preserving timestamped, multi-speaker transcripts suitable for qualitative research. It also adds configurable privacy modes that obfuscate named entities and PII in-place before transcripts leave the device.
The release focuses on practical usability: researchers can run live transcription during remote moderated sessions or store encrypted transcripts locally for later analysis. Integration points were announced for popular research tools and transcription workflows so teams can ingest recordings into tagging and analysis platforms.
Field researchers appreciated the low-latency capability and privacy controls, which simplify on-location studies in privacy-sensitive contexts. Limitations include reduced accuracy for low-resource languages and heavily accented speech, where cloud-based, larger models remain preferable.
