PaperTrail Raises $30M to Expand Metadata-Driven Documentation for Design Systems

PaperTrail's platform attaches structured metadata to components and design tokens, creating a searchable graph that ties UI changes to user research, A/B results, and accessibility checks. Customers can audit design decisions and generate compliance reports automatically.

The new funds will be used to deepen IDE and design-tool integrations, add role-based governance workflows, and develop automated migration tooling for deprecated tokens and components. PaperTrail also plans a 'change-impact' simulator that predicts downstream UI effects when tokens are altered.

Design operations teams have expressed enthusiasm, particularly in regulated industries where auditability is required. PaperTrail will expand enterprise sales and professional services to help large companies onboard and map their existing design artifacts.
