Neurodiversity-friendly design goes beyond visual accessibility: it includes predictable information architecture, reduced cognitive load, and clear affordances. Design systems should provide variants of components optimized for cognitive accessibility—simplified card views, progressive disclosure patterns, and optional UI modes that minimize visual clutter and animation.
Component rules should be explicit: default to single-column reading flows where possible, provide clear and consistent labeling conventions, and include a ‘reduced complexity’ variant for toolbars and forms that removes inline help and groups inputs logically. Offer editable templates in your system so teams can toggle cognitive-friendly modes during prototyping and testing.
Document the rationale for each pattern with real user scenarios and measured outcomes (task completion times, error rates) and include guidance on when not to use simplified variants—over-simplification can hinder expert users. Finally, make these patterns discoverable in your design system by tagging components with accessibility and neurodiversity badges, and include example content that demonstrates the pattern in realistic contexts.
