Pay Transparency Laws Nudge Teams to Publish Bands — What Designers Should Ask

More states and countries now require employers to include salary ranges in job postings or disclose them upon request. While this improves baseline fairness, the published bands often cover wide ranges and omit details like equity upside, bonus targets, and role level definitions, creating ambiguity for candidates.

Experienced designers recommend a short list of clarifying questions during interviews: what level corresponds to the posted band, how total comp is typically split between base and variable, vesting and refresh cadence for equity, and examples of recent hires at that band. Getting these answers early avoids misaligned expectations and saves time on both sides.

Employers are responding by standardizing leveling guides and publishing sample offers publicly, which benefits the market. Still, negotiation remains important — especially for candidates bringing cross-disciplinary skills such as ML collaboration or domain expertise — and understanding how bands map to actual team responsibilities is the key skill.
