PlayCanvas integrates 'Adaptive HUD' AI to auto-balance game UI across devices
Gaming · 3 min read
PlayCanvas released Adaptive HUD, an AI-driven solution that analyzes in-game scenes and automatically repositions HUD components to avoid occluding important gameplay elements. The system accounts for camera angles, game action hotspots, and device aspect ratios.
Adaptive HUD includes a rules engine allowing designers to set priorities (e.g., health always visible, chat deprioritized), and it generates layout variations for different device categories. Developers can preview how the HUD adapts under simulated gameplay conditions.
Indie developers appreciated the reduction in manual tuning for multiple device targets, while UX designers emphasized the need to test the adaptive layouts with real players. PlayCanvas plans to add heatmap-driven learning so the HUD can adapt to real player behaviors post-launch.
