Playdate Labs announced $18 million in new funding to produce a second-generation indie handheld console and a focused dev platform for rapid prototyping. The console targets short-session, tactile-first games and comes with a curated storefront and analytics dashboard for small studios.
The company plans to use funds to expand hardware production, improve developer SDKs, and subsidize porting costs for indie teams. Playdate Labs emphasizes low-friction publishing, offering flexible revenue splits and lightweight QA services to get small games into users' hands quickly.
Playdate Labs also introduced a cloud-based prototype share system so developers can distribute builds to testers instantly. The company believes there is a continuing appetite for curated, designer-driven handheld experiences in a market dominated by large-scale consoles.
