Playfield raises $85M to launch modular cloud platform for multiplayer games

Playfield announced an $85 million raise led by Kleiner Perkins to commercialize Playfield Cloud, a modular backend platform that handles matchmaking, authoritative state sync, cheat detection, and live events. The product is pitched at mid-sized studios seeking to scale without building custom server infrastructure.

Playfield Cloud includes a serverless matchmaker, regional tick servers, and an SDK that supports rollback networking and deterministic replay for fast-paced genres. The company emphasized cost predictability with spot-based compute and smart scaling policies.

Several live-service studios are in early access, testing Playfield Cloud for battle arena and cooperative multiplayer titles. Playfield plans to use funding to expand regions, improve latency optimization, and add built-in telemetry and analytics.
