Plugin ecosystem standard adopts 'DesignOperator' spec for AI tool interoperability

DesignOperator defines message schemas for model prompts, token synchronization, component mapping, and result provenance, enabling tools to call shared AI services without bespoke adapters. The spec includes security practices for sensitive assets and optional on-prem hooks.

Several major vendors signed on to initial drafts, committing to build adapters that allow plugins to run across host applications while preserving audit trails. The spec also defines versioning and capability negotiation so hosts can gracefully fall back when a plugin's feature set isn't supported.

Toolmakers said the standard will speed plugin development and make it easier for teams to adopt AI features without vendor lock-in. The group plans to open the spec for wider community contributions in the coming months.
