Reddit Thread UX Redesign: Moderation and Discovery Case Study
Design · 5 min read
Reddit's redesign introduced richer post headers, inline moderation cues, and contextual sorting to improve discoverability. Moderation tools were made more accessible within the thread view, enabling faster action on reports and clearer rule visibility for posters.
The redesign also experimented with discovery panels that surface related communities and long-form explanations, reducing redundant cross-posting. However, moving moderation controls required retraining many volunteer moderators, prompting incremental UI tweaks and enhanced documentation.
Community health metrics—report resolution time, post takedown transparency, and newcomer retention—were tracked closely. The outcome suggests that UX changes must be coupled with operational support for moderators to sustain improvements in content quality and discovery.
