Reddit's Community Discovery: UX Teardown of Subreddit Onboarding

Reddit's community structure is powerful but discoverability is uneven. We follow a new user from signup through subscribing to a 10-subreddit feed, analyzing the algorithms and UI cues that lead to echo chambers or broad interests.

Key touchpoints include the subreddit recommendation modal, related communities section, and the on-post community discovery chips. We evaluate how moderator tools and community rules are surfaced to newcomers and how that affects initial engagement and retention.

Improvement proposals include onboarding tracks based on interests, progressive community previews that show top posts across time windows, and reputation signals to help users find high-quality niche communities faster.
