Redesigning a Marketplace Checkout: From Clunky Cart to Contextual Payments

Marketplace teams often wrestle with asymmetric information — buyers hesitate, and sellers need fast conversions. In this project, analytics showed a spike in checkout abandonment on the review-and-pay screen and a high rate of disputes tied to perceived seller reliability. The team mapped the buyer journey and identified moments where trust signals could alter the decision calculus.

The redesign introduced contextual guarantees (deposit protection for first-time buyers), clearer breakdowns of fees, and an inline timeline showing estimated delivery and refund windows. They also added an 'ask a seller a question' microflow during checkout that could pause the process without losing the user's cart state. To validate, designers prototyped the flow in Figma and conducted unmoderated usability tests with new and repeat buyers.

Post-launch metrics were positive: cancellations fell by 21%, dispute rates dropped 15%, and conversion for first-time buyers rose 12%. The product team credited the win to framing trust early and reducing cognitive load at the point of payment. The pattern was later adopted for other high-risk product categories on the platform.
