Redesigning an AI Writing Tool's Editor: From Feature Bloat to Focused Flow

Draftly, an AI writing tool, noticed a spike in churn among new signups who reported being overwhelmed by a cluttered editor filled with prompts, templates, and formatting controls. The product team used session recordings and time-to-first-draft metrics to identify that newcomers spent more time exploring the UI than writing.

The team introduced task-based modes: Quick Draft, Edit & Polish, and Research. Each mode surfaced only relevant controls—Quick Draft prioritized AI prompts and tone sliders, Edit & Polish emphasized grammar and style tools, and Research exposed citation assistants. Power users could switch to an Advanced toolbar that displayed the full feature set. Prototypes were tested with a mix of novice and experienced users to calibrate defaults and persistence.

Post-launch, time-to-first-draft dropped by 47% for new users and retention at day 7 improved by 18%. Advanced users retained their workflows because the mode switch was non-destructive and keyboard shortcuts preserved muscle memory. The product team also added contextual onboarding modals that suggested modes based on initial user goals gathered at signup.
