Studio WildPulse found during playtesting that new players were overwhelmed by the amount of UI overlaid on gameplay—mini-map, inventory, ability cooldowns, and chat all competed for attention. The original HUD prioritized feature parity with console but failed to account for smaller screens and one-thumb play. Their redesign prioritized sightlines, reachability, and in-combat information prioritization.
Changes included moving non-critical elements to an expandable radial drawer, compressing HUD chrome during combat using an 'immersive mode', and introducing adaptive scaling based on device DPI. Critical elements—health, mini-map, and primary ability—received larger tap targets and consistent placement in the lower corners for ergonomic reach. The team also implemented translucency and dynamic contrast to avoid occlusion of enemy visuals.
Playtest metrics showed a 22% reduction in accidental taps, faster target acquisition in combat encounters, and improved onboarding retention for new players. Competitive players appreciated the reduced clutter in high-stakes moments, while social players used the radial drawer to share loadouts. The case illustrates that mobile HUD design benefits from context-aware compression and ergonomic-first placement rather than direct porting of desktop patterns.
