Relocation stipends decline as companies normalize remote-first hiring
Tech · 3 min read
Since remote work matured, many companies have scaled back relocation offers except for leadership hires or critical operations roles. Instead, firms provide one-time home-office setup stipends, recurring coworking credits, or stipends for high-speed internet and ergonomic equipment.
Candidates who still want relocation support can often negotiate it, but the baseline expectation has shifted. Employers argue this is more equitable and reduces the overhead of subsidizing cross-border moves that may not be necessary for role performance.
Designers should clarify relocation needs early in the process and consider total package tradeoffs. If a move is non-negotiable, applicants can request lump-sum relocation packages or ask for phased in-office expectations tied to future equity refreshers.
