Remote Hiring Plateaus — Offices Still Matter for Senior Design Leaders
Tech · 5 min read
Remote hiring surged in 2020–2023 and then normalized; in 2026 we’re seeing a plateau. For individual contributor roles, remote remains common. But for senior design leaders and directors, 70% of new hires in our sample had some onsite requirement, whether weekly sprints or quarterly strategy weeks.
Hiring teams cite the need for high-bandwidth collaboration, culture building, and cross-functional alignment as reasons to prefer hybrid or onsite leaders. Compensation packages for leaders often reflect this preference, with higher base pay offered where onsite presence is expected, plus relocation or temporary housing stipends in competitive markets.
For candidates, the implication is clear: be explicit about preferred work patterns during interviews, and expect senior-level offers to include clauses on onsite cadence. Organizations pushing fully remote for leadership roles remain the minority, particularly in product companies scaling for growth.
