RetroLabs Ships Modular Handheld Console Targeting Indie Developers

The Modular X combines a 5.5-inch display with an open hardware bay that accepts add-ons like motion sensors, additional shoulder buttons and a secondary GPU module for heavier emulation. RetroLabs focused on a developer-friendly stack: a Linux-based SDK, hot-swappable modules and a unified driver framework.

RetroLabs is courting indie studios and retro communities that want to prototype custom controllers and gameplay experiments without complex hardware contracts. The company is also launching a developer portal with documentation, sample modules and crowdfunding for community-designed expansions.

Shipping begins next quarter with a limited batch for early backers. RetroLabs says the device strikes a balance between hobbyist flexibility and production readiness, allowing small teams to iterate hardware-aware gameplay quickly.
