RetroWorks closes $15M seed and launches RetroCanvas, a nostalgia-driven game engine

RetroWorks, a studio founded by veteran indie developers, secured a $15 million seed round from PlaySpark to support RetroCanvas, its lightweight game engine tailored for pixel-art aesthetics and retro audio. RetroCanvas includes an editor focused on rapid prototyping, built-in asset pipelines, and collaborative level editing.

The company emphasized accessibility for solo developers and small teams: the engine supports modular physics, baked lighting for stylized looks, and an integrated marketplace for sprites and music. RetroWorks also unveiled a subscription tier that bundles engine updates with community workshops led by experienced pixel artists.

For designers and game creators, RetroCanvas promises fast iteration on visual and tactile feel. RetroWorks said the seed funds will expand community initiatives, add live multiplayer tools, and support outreach programs to teach hobbyists how to ship small commercial titles.
