Runway updates Gen-Edit with collaborative version control and asset locking
Design ยท 4 min read
Runway's update lets multiple designers create edit branches from a base image, experiment with different prompts and masks, and then merge chosen edits into a mainline export. The system tracks edit provenance, prompts used, and intermediate outputs for auditability.
Asset locking prevents accidental overwrites during collaborative sprints, and a visual diff tool highlights pixel-level and semantic changes between branches. The team also added integration with popular DAMs and project trackers.
Agencies reported faster collaborative iteration and clearer attribution across teams. Runway emphasized UX improvements for approvals and legal sign-off by keeping a searchable history of edits and prompts.
Some artists asked for richer merge strategies beyond pixel merges; Runway said richer semantic merging and style-preserving merges are in active development.
