Salary Compression Hits Mid-Level UX Designers at Big Tech
Tech · 4 min read
Salary compression—where compensation differences between junior, mid-level and senior roles narrow—has intensified at major tech companies. Companies that previously offered steep jumps between levels have broadened benefits and stock packages for mid-level designers, eroding incentive for rapid promotion.
Managers say compression is partly due to market tightening for talent and efforts to retain staff during headcount freezes. For designers it means clearer promotion criteria and increased emphasis on demonstrable impact and cross-functional leadership to justify salary bumps.
Design leaders are experimenting with alternative levers such as spot bonuses, learning stipends, and role scope changes to reward mid-level talent. Career ladders are being rewritten to add more granular seniority levels and measurable milestones.
