Salary Transparency Laws Push Design Hiring to Standardized Bands
Tech · 3 min read
Salary transparency laws that expanded in 2025–2026 require employers to include pay ranges in job postings, which has accelerated the adoption of standardized leveling frameworks for designers. Companies that previously relied on ad-hoc negotiation are now codifying bands tied to clear competency matrices and impact metrics.
Design leaders say this has decreased offer variance and improved candidate trust, but it also constrains negotiating flexibility for top-of-market candidates. Some firms have introduced “above-band” bonuses and sign-on equity to remain competitive while complying with transparency rules.
Candidates benefit from clearer expectations, making it easier to target roles suited to their career stage. Recruiters warn, though, that overly rigid bands can make it difficult to hire interdisciplinary or rare-skill designers without a separate approval path for exceptional talent.
