Simplifying Microcopy: A Before/After Study on Error Messages in a Health App
Design · 4 min read
HealthReminder's account recovery and medication logging flows used terse, technical error messages that confused users and triggered support tickets. Moderated sessions revealed that users interpreted messages as system failure or personal fault, which decreased re-engagement and increased churn in onboarding cohorts.
The design team established microcopy principles: plain language, actionable steps, empathy, and next-best-action CTAs. Examples include changing 'Token invalid' to 'We couldn’t recover your account. Try sending a recovery link to this email or contact support' and converting ambiguous 'Error 402' states into clear instructions with one-tap recovery options. Microcopy variants were A/B tested in production with in-app recovery funnels instrumented for completion and emotional sentiment collected via short micro-surveys.
Results were immediate: completion of account recovery improved by 26% and support tickets related to logging errors fell by 34%. Users reported feeling less anxious and more confident proceeding after encountering problems. The study demonstrates that small wording changes, guided by empathy and clear action, materially improve outcomes in sensitive product domains.
