Sketch introduces Smart Symbols: AI-powered symbol suggestions and auto-updates
Design · 3 min read
Sketch released Smart Symbols, a capability that analyzes a document to find repeating UI elements and recommends creating symbols with suggested names and props. The feature also supports automatic instance updates with a review flow to approve changes across multiple artboards.
The underlying model recognizes patterns like repeated headers, nav bars, and card structures, and proposes accessible defaults such as focus states and keyboard hints. Smart Symbols integrates with Sketch Libraries, enabling design systems teams to accept or customize proposed tokens before pushing them to the library.
Sketch is positioning Smart Symbols as a productivity tool to reduce manual refactoring and encourage consistent system-wide updates. The initial rollout focuses on desktop, with a web-aware version planned later in the year.
