Sketch introduces Symbols 2.0 with predictive variants and state orchestration
Design · 5 min read
Symbols 2.0 lets designers declare variant families and surface AI-suggested variants based on real usage patterns and localization needs. The predictive engine analyzes component properties and project histories to recommend logical variants (e.g., compact, expanded, error) and suggests naming conventions to improve discoverability.
The state orchestration layer enables designers to define interactions that span multiple symbols, like coordinated loading states or skeleton transitions. Orchestration rules can be exported to developers as annotated JSON that maps to component props in frameworks like React and Vue. Sketch also published migration tools to upgrade existing libraries with minimal manual edits.
Plugin authors welcomed improved APIs for mapping design states to code. Sketch says Symbols 2.0 is part of an ongoing push to make design systems more resilient as apps grow, and to reduce the friction of maintaining a living UI library across teams.
