Sketch Launches Generative Components: Parametric Symbols Powered by LLMs

Sketch's new Generative Components feature allows designers to type descriptions like create a primary button with adjustable corner radius and icon slot, and receive a fully editable symbol with responsive variants. The generated components include constraints and token mappings to match Sketch's design system features.

Under the hood, Sketch uses a hybrid inference approach: initial prompts are handled by a hosted LLM for creative synthesis, while final tokenization and symbol generation run on a local microservice to protect IP and ensure consistent export. Generated components come with suggested tokens for color, spacing, and typography.

Plugin authors can extend the feature by providing domain-specific prompts and linking components to internal design tokens. Designers praised the speed at which small UI patterns can be generated, though some teams requested better guardrails for accessibility and localization.
