Sketch releases “Context Layers” to link design tokens to AI model outputs

Sketch v88 introduces Context Layers, a feature that attaches design tokens, usage rationales, and accessibility annotations to layers created or modified by generative tools. When a model suggests a color or spacing, Context Layers record the reasoning and relevant constraints so teams can audit AI interventions.

The update includes a compatibility bridge for popular generative plugins: models that output design edits must provide a minimal provenance JSON payload that Sketch ingests and displays. This helps maintain design system consistency even when teams rely on AI to iterate rapidly.

Design leads responded positively, noting that Context Layers reduce friction in design reviews and make it easier to revert model-driven changes. Sketch says the feature will be free for teams and integrates with existing version control and comment systems.
