Snapchat Lens Ecosystem: AR UX and Creator Monetization Teardown

Snapchat optimized lens discovery through quick-scan camera affordances and persistent lens trays linked to contexts and face recognition. The Lens Studio made AR creation accessible, enabling creators to ship lenses quickly, but discovery remained gated by Snapchat’s Spotlight and featured lens programs.

Monetization evolved from sponsored lenses to revenue-sharing for high-performing creators, yet the transparency of payouts and promotional mechanisms is limited. Creators rely on external channels for promotion, and in-app analytics are often inadequate for iterative design.

To improve the ecosystem, Snapchat could introduce richer in-app analytics, a discovery marketplace with clearer promotion mechanics, and guideline-driven templates that help creators optimize for virality and retention. These measures would grow creator earnings and close the feedback loop for better AR experiences.
