Snapchat democratized AR by lowering technical barriers with Lens Studio and easy sharing. The platform emphasizes low-latency tracking and immediate visual feedback, which makes playful experimentation contagious and drives rapid virality for novel lenses.

However, discoverability of lenses suffers as the catalog grows. The current system favors trending and sponsored lenses, making it harder for smaller creators to surface. Performance trade-offs also mean heavier effects are gated to newer devices, fragmenting user experience.

Design fixes include better categorization, creator spotlight rotations, and progressive effect degradation that preserves the lens idea even on older devices. Providing template-driven onboarding for new lens creators would also expand the ecosystem without sacrificing quality.
