Sony PlayStation unveils PS Canvas: an AI-driven level design assistant for indie developers
Gaming · 5 min read
PS Canvas takes high-level design briefs—genre, difficulty curve, key mechanics—and generates level geometry, object placement, and pacing metrics. The output is delivered as editable scenes with placeholder art and difficulty-scaling parameters. Canvas also offers a playtesting mode that simulates player paths and flags choke points.
Sony highlighted partnerships with middleware providers to ensure smooth export into both Unity and Unreal, and added features to respect IP constraints and asset provenance. For scalability, Canvas allows seed locking so teams can reproduce or branch level generations systematically.
Indie developers welcomed the reduced prototyping time but stressed the importance of fine-grained control for emergent gameplay. Sony responded with roadmap items for more interactive editing tools and better integration with custom physics and AI behaviors.
