Spotify’s design system introduces 'Hear' tokens to support neurodiverse listeners

Spotify’s design team has launched a new class of tokens—called 'Hear' tokens—within its internal design system to centralize assistive audio behaviors and neuro-inclusive defaults. Hear tokens cover parameters such as narration verbosity, playback pacing, emphasis markers for spoken-word content, and optional visual highlight styles synchronized with audio, allowing product components to consume a single source of truth for assistive playback behavior.

The approach decouples assistive behaviors from individual features: player components read a user's Hear profile and automatically adapt narration verbosity, toggle verbal focus indicators, or enable simplified UI modes. Product managers can A/B test different token presets and track engagement for neurodiverse cohorts without modifying core player logic.

Designers and accessibility researchers report the tokens streamline cross-platform parity: the same token set governs native apps, web players, and car integrations. Spotify said it will open-source the token schema and example mappings later this year to encourage interoperability with other media platforms and assistive tech vendors.
