Steam Library Redesign Teardown: Usability Versus Feature Richness
Gaming · 6 min read
Valve's library redesign prioritized visual tiles, large hero headers, and curated highlights to make a sprawling collection feel cinematic. However, the emphasis on artwork and curation sometimes hides utility: deep filters and tagging systems are present but less discoverable than before, complicating library housekeeping for users with large catalogs.
Steam's collections feature is powerful but manual-heavy; automated smart collections exist but are limited. Social and community content—news, changelogs, curator recommendations—interleave with owned titles, leading to context switching when users want quick access to launch, DLC, or mods.
Refinements could include compact librarian views for power users, persistent filter presets, and a clearer separation between owned content and discovery tiles. These adjustments would let Steam keep the visual improvements while restoring fast access for heavy gamers.
