Strava prioritizes community-driven routes and heatmaps, which are excellent for finding popular segments. However, raw popularity doesn't always equal safety: high-traffic or poorly lit roads can appear attractive based on speed-focused data, leading riders into hazardous choices.

Route planning could integrate safety layers: lighting conditions, elevation difficulty, shoulder width, and historical incident markers. Intelligent defaults for different user goals (commute vs. training vs. scenic ride) would help surface paths aligned with rider intent, and color-coded risk overlays would offer quick visual cues.

Combining community notes with crowd-sourced hazard reports and temporary alerts (construction, closures) would make Strava a more responsible navigation tool. Importantly, privacy safeguards must ensure that less-trafficked routes and sensitive locations remain protected from undue exposure.
