TikTok Moderation UX: A Case Study in Creator Feedback Loops
Tech · 6 min read
TikTok's moderation system must operate at massive scale, using automated classification and human review. The product's UX for content takedowns and strikes emphasizes rapid enforcement but often lacks explanatory detail for creators, leading to frustration and appeals churn.
When a video is removed or limited, the app supplies a brief violation tag but rarely provides the exact policy clause or an example clip showing the violation. Appeals are available but are slow and provide generic responses. That lack of specificity undermines creators' ability to learn and adapt.
Effective design changes would include a 'why this decision' card listing policy excerpts and timestamps, a sample of similar content (redacted) that illustrates the rule, and a faster micro-appeal path for clear borderline cases. Combined, these changes would decrease repeat violations and reduce moderation overhead.
