TypeCraft launches VariableMaker and raises $3.5M seed to modernize font design

VariableMaker streamlines interpolation, axis design, and fitness testing across different screen sizes and devices. The tool includes a visual axis editor, automated kerning recommendations, and export pipelines that generate WOFF2 variable fonts alongside static instances for legacy platforms.

TypeCraft’s $3.5 million seed will fund product iteration, integration with popular design tools, and partnerships with font foundries. The company is offering a designer beta program and migration guides for teams managing multi-platform typographic systems.

The startup emphasized accessibility and internationalization features — per-script axis tuning, optical sizes for high-density screens, and tokenized font exports for design systems. TypeCraft aims to remove friction in adopting variable fonts in production UI, lowering file-size overhead while improving typographic flexibility.
