Unity and Epic reach agreement on a unified accessibility API for games

In a rare show of collaboration, Unity and Epic Games have published a joint accessibility API specification for game engines that standardizes how games expose UI, metadata, and input affordances to assistive technologies. The API covers in-game UI trees, readability hints for HUDs, input remapping metadata, and a telemetry channel for real-time narration assistance.

The specification is designed to be engine-agnostic and includes reference adapters for both Unity and Unreal Engine, allowing studios to adopt the same accessibility layer irrespective of their rendering stack. Early evangelists from indie studios say the API reduces duplication and makes it easier to ship accessibility features across multiple platforms.

Both companies also announced a shared grant program to fund open-source middleware that implements the API for popular platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch. Game accessibility advocates noted the step forward but urged rapid tooling support for localization and non-visual play sessions.
